H 2 the O

Blood, muscles, lungs, and brain all contain water. You need water to regulate body temperature and to provide the means for nutrients to travel to your organs and tissues. It also helps transport oxygen to your cells, removes waste, and protects your joints and organs. And it helps with weight loss!

I carry around with me a 24 ounce container and drink 100 -120 ounces of water a day, because I breastfeed, workout for at least 90 minutes everyday, and live in a hot place.

HOW MUCH DO YOU DRINK DAILY?

Health Starts Here, A Nutrition Series: "Nutrients"

There are six classes of nutrients found in food. Carbohydrates, lipids (fats & oils), proteins, vitamins, minerals, and water. These nutrients are vital in three functional categories:
1. Providing calories for your body's energy needs
2. Important for your body's growth, development, and maintenance
3. And keeping your body functions running smoothly

The energy-yielding nutrients, carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, make up a major portion of most foods.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

What are carbohydrates?

Rules: No looking up! Just give your answer based on personal knowledge. This is intended to be a survey for my next blog post on nutrition. Please play fair. Thank you.

Health Starts Here, A Nutrition Series: Introduction

Are you eating too much saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol? Do carbohydrates in your diet cause many of your health problems? Is a high protein diet always safe and foolproof? Are some foods unsafe? Do you need to take a balanced multivitamin supplement? Should you become a vegetarian? If you have asked yourself any of these questions and are confused about what you should eat, your are not alone. I will help you sort out some of these issues as you are introduced to the science of nutrition.

Nutrition is a lifestyle factor that is key to developing and maintaining an optimal state of health for you. A poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle are known to be risk factors for life-threatening chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, and some forms of cancer. Together, these and other disorders account for two-thirds of all deaths in North America.

Follow this series over the next few weeks to learn why proper nutrition is vital for growth and maintenance of a healthy body throughout life.
